The State Bar & Lounge was a storied cocktail lounge set within the historic Rice Hotel (now Rice Lofts) in downtown Houston, trading on its legendary past as the Capitol Club — a gathering place for the city's most powerful attorneys, politicians, and powerbrokers, and reputedly the site of President Kennedy's last drink. The interior exuded vintage glamour with a sizable wooden bar top, leather sofas, vintage chairs, and official-looking seals on the walls evoking a classic hotel lounge of a bygone era. A second-story patio perched atop the Rice Hotel's metal awning offered one of the best panoramic views of Texas Street and downtown Houston. The bar became a beloved rite of passage for newly minted Texas lawyers celebrating passing the bar exam, cementing its identity as downtown's quintessential legal/political haunt.
