The Pastry War was a celebrated mezcaleria in downtown Houston founded by Bobby Heugel and Alba Huerta, named after the 1838 conflict between Mexico and France. The bar was renowned for its astonishing selection of over 100 small-batch, sustainably-produced agave spirits — tequilas, mezcals, and sotols — sourced directly from family-owned distilleries in Mexico. The narrow, atmospheric space featured exposed brick walls, neon signage, Nahuatl masks displayed behind cages, Día de Muertos imagery, framed maps of Mexico, and a half-VW Beetle installation, with a back room housing free pool tables. Equally famous for its outstanding margaritas and weekly half-price Mezcal Wednesdays, it was a beloved fixture for spirits enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike until it permanently closed on October 30, 2022.
